Music therapy at the neonatology ward
premature birth, adaptation dysfunctions, congenital malformations
Premature babies are a growing patient group. Children are often hospitalised in the neonatology intensive care ward for up to four months, exposing them to many stimuli such as random noise. They miss the familiar sounds from the womb that give them security and contribute to (brain) development.
Since 2013, creative music therapy has provided premature babies and sick new-borns in Bern with positive, individually fine-tuned, calming hearing and sensory experiences. Parents are encouraged to create a relationship with their child as well by vocal attention. Two music therapists offer this innovative therapy to families.
